CHAT Camp Wraps Up Successful Summer Program

The Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University is helping to provide a voice to nonverbal children. This video explains the concept of CHAT (Communication Hope through Assistive Technology) and explains how one SU alumnus is lending a voice and his support to the program.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — In a victory for the rights of adults with disabilities, a judge declared Friday that a 29-year-old woman with Down syndrome can live the life she wants, rejecting a guardianship request from her parents that would have allowed them to keep her in a group home against her will. The ruling thrilled Jenny Hatch and her supporters, who included some of the country’s most prominent disability advocates. Virginia woman at center of complicated guardianship fight: Margaret Jean Hatch, 29, who has Down syndrome, sought the right to live independently, at odds with her parents’ wishes. ... Peter Blanck, who has written books on the Americans with Disabilities Act and testified on behalf of Hatch, said he couldn’t recall seeing any contract as restrictive as the Rosses’ guardianship request.


Southeast ADA Center Announces the First Broadcast of WADA “ADA Live!” on BlogTalkRadio

On October 2, 2013, the Southeast ADA Center will launch “ADA Live!” on WADA, the Center’s internet-based radio station. WADA’s “ADA Live!” will broadcast live on the first Wednesday of each month from 1:00 pm -1:30 pm ET/12 Noon-12:30 pm CT.


Voice of the Syracuse Chiefs and Newhouse Prof. Named BBI Fellow

Jason Benetti, announcer for the Syracuse Chiefs and adjunct professor at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication, has been selected as a fellow at the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University. BBI Fellow appointments provide select and accomplished individuals the opportunity to collaborate with BBI on innovative projects, related to their disciplines, with impact for people with disabilities.


International Disability Rights Expert to Join Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University

International disability law and policy expert Janet Lord will join the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University in August. Based in BBI’s Washington, D.C. office, Lord will manage a portfolio of international disability rights projects. She comes to BBI from BlueLaw International, where she was senior partner and director of human rights and inclusive development for eight years. She also held positions in the past as an attorney at the World Bank Group and Legal Counsel and Director of Advocacy for an international landmine survivor assistance organization.


Nienke Dosa named as first professor of child health policy at Upstate, and a senior fellow at SU’s Burton Blatt Institute

Nienke Dosa, MD, MPH, has been named as the inaugural Upstate Foundation Professor of Child Health Policy at Upstate Medical University/Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. She also has been named a senior fellow at the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University.
